Relient K is a pop punk band out of Canton, Ohio, working the seam between alternative rock and Christian rock that has defined them since the late 1990s. A Capitol Records act with more than two dozen releases behind them, the band moved from the sharp, hook-driven writing of "Forget and Not Slow Down" (2009) toward the looser pop of "Collapsible Lung" (2013) and then to "Air for Free" (2016), a record that reads as a return to their own instincts rather than anyone else's.
They started young. Matt Thiessen, Matt Hoopes, and Brian Pittman put the band together in 1998, during their third year of high school and their time at Malone University in Canton, and the group has carried that hometown with it ever since, to the point that Canton itself has become part of how their music gets described.
The lineup has grown over the years around Thiessen and Hoopes, with players including Todd Frescone and Stephen Cushman passing through, and the accolades have followed: a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album, two Dove Awards, and Covenant Awards recognition. On stage at rooms like The Basement East, they remain a durable draw for college programmers, festival and fair lineups, corporate dates, and private events looking for a band with a deep catalog and an audience that has stayed with it.
