Richie Hawtin is a DJ and producer who made minimal techno his long argument, and he built the platforms for it himself, co-founding Plus 8 Records and later running M_nus after earlier work through Definitive Recordings and IntelliNET. Decks, EFX & 909 is the record most listeners still reach for first, and he has kept moving in the same direction since, through From My Mind to Yours and the live album CLOSE COMBINED, recorded in Glasgow, London and Tokyo.
His route to techno came the long way around. Hawtin was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, and moved at nine with his parents to LaSalle, Ontario, near Detroit, where the techno scene then taking shape set the terms for everything that followed. He has also worked under other project names, among them States of Mind and Final Exposure.
The recognition has tracked that same narrow focus: Best Techno DJ at the DJ Awards in 2002, 2006 and 2008, an honorary mention in digital music from Prix Ars Electronica, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Dance Music Awards in 2019. He is a featured artist at Detroit's Movement Festival, and his sets have reached past clubs into rooms like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. That reach makes him a sought-after booking for festival lineups, college events, casino and corporate dates, and private events where a techno headliner suits the room.
