Rusted Root is a rock band from Pittsburgh, working a mix of worldbeat rock, alternative rock, and the loose, quasi-jam approach that made their live sets travel. Their album When I Woke was certified platinum by the RIAA, and the group's Mercury Records years carried them through the self-titled Rusted Root in 1998 and Welcome to My Party in 2002. By the time The Best of Rusted Root arrived in 2005, the catalog had grown to more than two dozen releases.
It started as a high-school friendship. Michael Glabicki and Liz Berlin played together as an acoustic duo, and in 1990 they widened it into a band by adding drummer Jim Donovan, trained at the University of Pittsburgh, and guitarist-bassist Patrick Norman. That rhythm-forward lineup is the reason the band's sound leans on percussion as much as on guitars.
Glabicki has fronted the group on lead vocals and guitar, with Berlin, Donovan, and Norman filling out the core of a band that built its reputation on the strength of the songs rather than on studio polish. With a platinum album behind them and three decades of work since Pittsburgh, Rusted Root remains a durable booking for festival and fair lineups, college events, casinos, corporate dates, and private shows.
