Samara Joy is a jazz vocalist working in the standards tradition, with a repertoire that reaches from traditional pop and jazz standards into bossa nova. Her self-titled debut arrived in 2021, and the follow-up, Linger Awhile, won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album while she took Best New Artist in the same 2023 cycle. Portrait, released in 2024 on UMG, extended that run and brought her another Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy.
She came to the music honestly. Joy grew up in the Bronx in a family of gospel singers, studied music at SUNY Purchase College, and won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition before launching her career as a vocalist.
Her recent Grammy wins include Best Jazz Performance for "Tight" and, alongside pianist Sullivan Fortner, for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me." On the road she fronts the Samara Joy Octet, with festival appearances including the Ottawa Jazz Festival and theater dates from the Jo Long Theatre at the Carver Community Cultural Center in San Antonio to Casa del Jazz and Trui Teatre. That combination of Grammy credentials and a full working band makes her a strong fit for performing arts centers, jazz festival lineups, college programming, corporate events, and private engagements.
