Shura (Alexandra Denton) is a British singer, songwriter, and producer whose breezy, bittersweet take on '80s and '90s pop has earned her a devoted following and serious critical attention. Her 2016 debut Nothing's Real established her sound as gauzy, nostalgic, and danceable. Her 2019 follow-up Forevher, released on Secretly Canadian, added range and emotional depth, drawing comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Minnie Riperton.
She came up the hard way. Self-taught on production software, she learned recording on a family mini-disc recorder at 16, studied at University College London, spent a gap year in the Amazon, and taught herself DAW production by watching YouTube tutorials on night shifts as a video editor. That background shows in her work: she builds everything herself, and it sounds like it.
Shura has collaborated with Joel Pott, Tourist, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, and Mura Masa, and was longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2015. With a devoted global following and a catalog that resonates especially strongly with LGBTQ+ audiences, college students, and indie music fans, Shura is a sought-after live act for festival and fair lineups, college events, and private engagements.
