St. Lucia is the synth-pop project Jean-Philip Grobler has been shaping since Before the Dive arrived in 2012. When the Night followed in 2013 and set the template the name is known for, bright indie pop with the synthesizers pushed forward, and by the time Hyperion landed in 2018 the Nettwerk act was writing alternative dance songs plainly built for a room full of people rather than a pair of headphones.
The sound came together a long way from New York. Grobler grew up in Johannesburg, took in alternative and world music before he ever had a band of his own, and carried those influences to New York, where he started St. Lucia with his wife and collaborator Patti Beranek. Her keyboards, percussion and backing vocals have stayed close to the center of the group, which makes the project less a solo act with a touring lineup than a partnership that happens to fill a stage.
That partnership widens out into a full band onstage. Ross Clark on bass and Dustin Kaufman on drums give the songs their forward push, Nick Paul handles keyboards and synthesizers, and the years spent playing San Francisco rooms like The Independent and The Fillmore, the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., and a set at Coachella have turned that arrangement into a reliable live draw. It is a group that trades on melody and momentum in equal measure, which makes St. Lucia a natural booking for college campuses, corporate events, festival and fair lineups, casinos and private shows.
