Stone Temple Pilots emerged from San Diego in 1989, carving a distinct path through the alternative rock landscape. The original lineup featured Scott Weiland on vocals, brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo on guitar and bass respectively, and Eric Kretz on drums. Their debut album, Core (1992), catapulted them into stardom with hits like “Plush” and “Sex Type Thing,” blending grunge grit with melodic hooks. That success was amplified with Purple (1994), which included staples like “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline,” and marked a continued evolution of their sound.
Throughout the '90s, the band pushed boundaries with Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), No. 4 (1999), and Shangri-La Dee Da (2001), showing a willingness to experiment with psychedelic, glam, and acoustic textures. After a hiatus in the early 2000s due to personal and internal challenges, they reunited in 2008 and released a self-titled album in 2010.
Following Weiland’s departure in 2013 and the brief addition of Chester Bennington as frontman, the band welcomed vocalist Jeff Gutt in 2017. With Gutt, they released another self-titled album in 2018 and the more introspective, acoustic-driven Perdida in 2020. Stone Temple Pilots continue to tour nationally and internationally, playing festivals and headlining shows with the signature blend of raw energy and musical craftsmanship that made them one of the most impactful rock bands of their era.
