Stormzy is a British rapper who came up through grime and has since worked across afroswing and contemporary rap. His run of albums traces that widening: Gang Signs & Prayer in 2017, Heavy Is the Head in 2019, and This Is What I Mean in 2022, with his releases carried by UMG. He records as a solo artist under the name on his birth certificate, Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr.
He started early. Raised in Thornton Heath and of Ghanaian family background, he began rapping at age 11, clashing with older rappers at his local youth club long before any of it was a career.
The awards followed the work. He won Best Grime Act at the MOBO Awards in 2014 and again in 2015, took Best International Act: UK at the BET Awards in 2015, and won Best Video at the Rated Awards the same year for "Know Me From." In 2016 he received The Times Breakthrough Award at the South Bank Awards and the Innovator Award at the AIM Independent Music Awards. He has been a headliner at Glastonbury Festival, which makes him a sought-after live act for festival lineups, college events, corporate dates, and private engagements.
