Sugarcult are a Santa Barbara band that took the pop half of pop-punk seriously. Power pop melody, punk rock tempo, a streak of emo in the writing, all of it aimed at a room that wants to sing along. Start Static made the introduction, Palm Trees and Power Lines put their stretch of California right in the title, and Lights Out carried the run forward, with the records issued through Avex Group and a catalog that has kept growing well past those three.
They came up as a trio with a club-level education. Sugarcult formed in 1998 and played their first show opening for Superdrag at a local club in Santa Barbara, which set the terms for everything after it: a band that learned its craft on a stage, in front of somebody else's crowd, with a short set to win people over.
Tim Pagnotta fronts the group on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, with Airin Older, Kenny Livingston and Mark DeSantis filling out the lineup. More than two decades on from that first Santa Barbara club date, the band still works the alternative rock circuit in rooms like The Masquerade, which makes them a reliable live draw for college campuses, festival and fair lineups, casino stages and private events.
