Switch is an R&B and funk band from Mansfield, Ohio, and a self-contained one: the players wrote, sang and performed their own material rather than fronting a studio arrangement. Their music runs from soul through funk into disco-influenced club music, and their Motown catalog carried real commercial weight, with two albums certified Platinum and three Gold and total sales reported at more than eight million records. Polydor Records also sits among the group's label credits.
The band began where another one ended. Gregory Williams, a trumpet player and keyboardist who also sang lead, founded Switch in Ohio in 1976 after the breakup of White Heat, the group Barry White had produced. In 1977 Jermaine Jackson discovered them and brought the band to Motown, which is where the records that defined their catalog were made.
Switch put two lead voices out front: Bobby DeBarge, who sang lead and played keyboards and drums, and Phillip Ingram, with the DeBarge brothers giving the group its family core. That mix of instrumental depth and vocal harmony is what a buyer is hiring, and it travels well to casino showrooms, fair and festival stages, college events, corporate dates and private engagements.
