Sylvan Esso is Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, a duo who have been building songs out of voice and electronics since 2013. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2014, followed by What Now in 2017 and Free Love in 2020, a run that carried them from indie pop into electropop and indietronica. They record for Trekky Records.
The group came together sideways, out of two other bands. Meath was singing in the indie folk trio Mountain Man when she joined forces with Sanborn, an electronic producer who records as Made of Oak and plays bass in the psych-rock band Megafaun. They formed Sylvan Esso in Durham, North Carolina, and the two halves of that meeting are still audible in the music: a folk singer's phrasing set against a producer's rhythm tracks.
Both of the duo's later albums drew Grammy Award nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Album, What Now at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and Free Love at the 64th. They have toured behind those records steadily, with dates at rooms including Le Poisson Rouge, the Toulouse Theatre and Exploreasheville.com Arena. It makes them a natural fit for festival and fair lineups, college programming, corporate events and private shows.
