The Spinners are a Detroit vocal group whose work runs through rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, and Philly soul, with a recording history that reaches back to the mid-1950s. Early singles appeared on Tri-Phi, a decade at Motown followed, and the group found its widest success after signing with Atlantic in the 1970s. Love Trippin' arrived in 1980, and the catalog has stayed in print in the years since, from The Platinum Collection in 2007 to I'll Be Around in 2014.
They started as neighbors, not as a project. Five friends from a housing project in suburban Detroit began singing together in 1954, and that harmony group grew into a working act inside the city's studio system, including sessions at Hitsville U.S.A. during their Motown years. More than fifty releases carry the name, and the group has kept the songbook on the road as a regular draw on the oldies touring circuit.
Bobbie Smith, Billy Henderson, and Henry Fambrough anchored the group through its defining years, and the credentials followed: induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a place in the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame as one of the most successful vocal groups of the 1970s. Recent dates have taken them to the Newberry Opera House and to Batavia Downs for the Rockin' the Downs Summer Concert Series, the kind of room where the catalog does its work. They remain a dependable booking for fairs and festivals, casino showrooms, college and corporate events, and private engagements.
