DJ Press Play was born from a unique fusion of social media savvy and a passion for music. His career started through the viral Instagram page Friday Beers, founded by creative director Max Barrett. After witnessing the explosive growth of the Friday Beers account which had amassed one million followers in just eight months during 2020, Max approached his friend and music producer (who prefers to remain nameless) about an idea to create a new EDM artist by leveraging Friday Beers’ significant social reach to promote his music. As a tribute to their favorite musicians Daft Punk and Marshmello, they branded the act an enigmatic mask-wearing artist called DJ Press Play. The name was conceived as a tongue-in-cheek response to the public misconception that the art of DJing lacked technical prowess. DJ Press Play began by creating and releasing remixes and hour-long mixes on SoundCloud, gaining millions of streams, which started to cultivate a fan base online. He rose in popularity after the release of his first original song, Xtasy, leading to collaborations with prominent acts like Two Friends and David Guetta. DJ Press Play’s influence extended beyond music, as he played a crucial role in expanding the Friday Beers and Almost Friday brands beyond social media and into real-world experiences. He spearheaded the brand’s live event circuit, helping to sell out Friday Beers sponsored shows and concerts at venues across the nation. His ability to draw crowds and deliver captivating performances propelled the success of over 30 sold-out events. Soon after that, artists like Tiesto and Lost Kings invited him to open for some of their shows. Further cementing his rising popularity, a podcast interview with Cody Ko in March went viral when Cody praised DJ Press Play for his music making ability and the electrifying energy of his live performances. Another pivotal moment came recently when DJ Press Play produced a track with Gryffin called “Oceans”. As of May 17th, it’s #29 on Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. It was also featured by ESPN during the F1 Miami Grand Prix. This summer, DJ Press Play is dropping his debut EP Press Play, consisting of five original songs, which will be released with Mad Decent. Each track showcases his exceptional songwriting skills and melodic prowess with a blend of catchy pop hooks and energetic EDM beats. The project is more than just dance music; it’s a celebration of the joy that music can bring. DJ Press Play stands as a symbol of what can happen when you embrace misconceptions, flip the narrative, and combine the power of social
media and the love of music in unexpected ways.
