WOLVES is Los Angeles, CA. based duo, Marc Avery (vocals/piano) and Sean Carney (vocals/guitar/bass/keys), who were brought together through a mutual friend in 2016, where they had instant chemistry and went on to create their infectious, unique and signature sound they call “Surf Trap”. It’s a mix of “stadium sound” because of the slick melodies and booming bass and drums. The “Surf” is Los Angeles where Sean is from, which describes his ridiculous guitar licks and groovy production. The “Trap” is Chicago where Marc is from, and you can hear the windy city in his lyrics and melody. Together, it’s a pop alternative sound like nothing else you’ve ever heard.
Marc began his musical journey when he was 19, where he joined the a cappella choir in college. “I only did it to get off campus and meet girls” says Avery. However, it was a break-up that led him to pick up a pen and started writing. “Later in the Fall I got in the studio for the first time and while the song was terrible, I was addicted. Music has been playing in my head ever since.”
Sean started getting serious about music in high school, where he first started playing in metal bands as a vocalist and guitarist. He can’t help but bring that intensity into his approach to music, no matter the style.
How did the name WOLVES come about? Marc was trying to figure out some names and had a list of them. One that sticks out was PlayBox SegaTendo, just terrible names. But one I wrote in all caps was WOLVES, I said it one day and it had a ring to it. Avery says, “At first it was just a cool name and a cool animal but as time went on and we bonded together like a pack of WOLVES for real. We realized we were going about this music thing solo and things got way better once we became a group. WOLVES means family, loyalty, and having each other’s backs and everyone can join the pack!”
WOLVES songs come from real life experiences. No matter what they’re writing, they always try to put themselves in it as much as possible. Carney says, “Marc is a gifted songwriter and lyricist. Just when you think you know where he’s going, he has the ability to throw curveballs that provoke and inspire.” Sean is an eccentric producer who works to take the songs to the next level sonically to tell the story the best it can be told.
In 2017, WOLVES were invited to compete on NBC’s SONGLAND SEASON 2, which began to open doors for them. WOLVES music can be heard on The Fast and Furious 9 trailer, The NBA on TNT, The MLB on TBS, The CW and more.
Be on the lookout for their brand new single and lyric video, “I Get Back Up” which will be on all streaming platforms soon! You can also catch them at a venue near you in the coming months.
