Dr. Dog make indie rock with one foot in neo-psychedelia and the other in indie folk, a sound roomy enough to carry baroque pop arrangements and low fidelity recording habits in the same song. On Park the Van, the band built a catalog that now runs past four dozen entries, and the through-line is a group that kept following its own ear rather than settling: the murk of The Psychedelic Swamp gave way two years later to Critical Equation, and the writing has stayed restless since. More than two decades in, they have a body of work most bands never get around to making.
Dr. Dog did not begin as a band at all. In 1999 it was a recording project for two members of the indie-rock band Raccoon, a place to put songs that had nowhere else to go. When Raccoon folded in the early 2000s, the side project became the main one, and the group out of West Grove has been at it full time ever since. That origin still explains a lot about them, including a comfort with tape hiss and homemade arrangements that never left the records once the rooms got bigger.
Toby Leaman handles vocals, bass and guitar next to Scott McMicken, with Zach Miller and Eric Slick filling out the band that carries these songs on stage. Their touring history reflects the range of the catalog, from a club night at Ardmore Music Hall to outdoor stages the size of Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater and Sundown at Granada. That flexibility makes them a durable live booking for festival and fair lineups, college campuses, corporate stages and private events, an act with the catalog to headline and the road experience to fit the room they are given.
