Josh Johnson has built his name the long way, working steadily as a stand-up since at least 2015 and letting the recordings follow the road rather than lead it. His first album arrived in 2017, and "Elusive" came later, once the act had turned over again. What the credits do not quite convey is the range of rooms that now book him, from theater stages like the Golden State Theatre and the Paramount Theatre down to a club night at KOKO, a spread that suits a comic who works in straight stand-up as easily as he does spoken word and the occasional comedy-and-music mixtape.
He came up in Chicago. That is where the stand-up started, and New York is where it sharpened, on a festival circuit that noticed him early: Just for Laughs in Montreal put him in its New Face class in 2016, and Comedy Central had already tagged him a Comic to Watch the year before that.
The city eventually made it official, handing him the New York's Funniest title at the 2018 New York Comedy Festival, and Variety named him one of its 10 Comics to Watch in 2021. He is an NAACP award-winner as well, the kind of line that tends to reassure a buyer weighing a headliner for a college date.
