Joyner Lucas writes rap built for argument rather than background. He started early. Gary Maurice "Joyner" Lucas Jr. was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on August 17, 1988, and was rapping by the age of 10, which puts close to three decades of writing behind the verses that carry his name. Worcester stays in the story rather than getting written out of it: the hometown, not an adopted rap capital, is the return address on the catalog.
The industry recognition arrived in one stretch. In 2019 Lucas took two Grammy nominations in the same year, one for Best Rap Song for "Lucky You," his collaboration with Eminem, and one for Best Music Video for "I'm Not Racist," the 2018 release that put his writing in front of an audience well outside rap radio.
