JPEGMAFIA is the recording name of Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks, an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer whose work sits between experimental hip hop, cloud rap, and alternative R&B. Veteran, in 2018, established the template: hardcore delivery over production he builds himself, full of glitch and abrupt turns. All My Heroes Are Cornballs followed in 2019, and by the time he released I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU in 2024, on his own Peggy imprint, he had a catalog of more than two dozen releases behind him and a sound no one else was making.
The geography explains some of it. Hendricks was born October 22, 1989, in New York City, in Flatbush, and came up out of Baltimore, Maryland. East Coast hip hop is in the foundation of the music, but he has spent his career pulling it apart rather than preserving it.
He remains, in practice, a one-man operation: writer, singer, rapper, and producer on his own records. The live show has scaled well past club rooms into arena stages including Climate Pledge Arena, Rogers Arena, and the Moda Center. That combination, a self-produced artist with a deep catalog and an audience that fills large rooms, makes him a strong fit for college programming, festival and fair lineups, casino dates, corporate events, and private engagements booked through Degy Entertainment.
