Jurassic 5 is a Los Angeles hip hop group working in alternative and conscious hip hop. The group introduced itself with the Jurassic 5 LP in 1998, then built out its catalog with Quality Control in 2000 and Power in Numbers in 2002 before Feedback arrived in 2006. Their records came out through TVT Records.
The group did not assemble in a studio. It came together in 1993 out of two Los Angeles crews, Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee, whose members were part of the underground scene at the Good Life Café. Those two crews merged into a single six-member group, and the café where they met remains the origin point of the name.
Chali 2na and Akil handle the vocal front, with Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark behind them, and the full lineup has stayed rooted in the group format it started with. More than three decades on from the Good Life Café, Jurassic 5 remains a sought-after live act for festival and fair lineups, college programming, casino rooms, corporate dates and private engagements.
