Juicy J is the stage name of Jordan Michael Houston, a Memphis rapper who helped write the rulebook for Southern hip hop and trap. His run stretches from the group work that made his name to a steady solo catalog, anchored by Stay Trippy in 2013 and, later, The Hustle Continues in 2020. Across it all he stays rooted in the Memphis rap sound he came up on.
He built it from the ground up. Houston started out DJing around his hometown in the early 1990s, and in 1991 he co-founded the crew Backyard Posse with DJ Paul and Lord Infamous, the outfit that would grow into Three 6 Mafia. That grounding in Memphis is the through-line of everything that followed.
With DJ Paul, Crunchy Black, and Frayser Boy, Juicy J shared in Three 6 Mafia's Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2006, for "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from the film Hustle & Flow. He was later named HipHopDX's Comeback of the Year in 2012. Records on his own Trippy Music label, he remains a sought-after live act for festivals and fairs, college and corporate events, casino dates, and private shows.
