Kentucky Headhunters play country the way a rock band plays it, drawing on bluegrass, southern rock and outlaw country in the same set. Their records track a group that kept working rather than chasing a trend: Songs From the Grass String Ranch in 2000, Soul in 2003, and Dixie Lullabies in 2011, with more than twenty other titles surrounding them. In 2009 they signed with Hickory Records.
The band existed long before the name did. In 1968 the Young brothers and their cousins Martin and Kenney formed Itchy Brother, a southern blues-rock outfit out of Edmonton. That lineup carried the name until 1986, when it became The Kentucky Headhunters.
Greg Martin, Fred Young and Anthony Kenney remain at the center of the group, alongside Rickey Lee Phelps and Mark S Orr. Along the way the band has taken home a Grammy Award, three Country Music Awards, an American Music Award and an Academy of Country Music Award. They continue to work stages that suit a loud country act, from the Beaver Dam Amphitheater to Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center, which makes them a durable fit for fair and festival lineups, casino rooms, corporate dates and private events.
