Laidback Luke belongs to house music, and he has spent his career pushing at the edges of it rather than settling into one lane. His work runs from electro house to the harder, funk-driven Dutch house strain and out toward techno and progressive house, and his catalog is deep enough that the singles function as waypoints instead of highlights: "We Are the Stars" for the widescreen version of his sound, "Mufasa" for the blunt club version, "S.A.X." for the hook that refuses to leave a room. More than thirty releases sit behind those, most of them through Mixmash and Subspace.
He came to house the long way around. Born in Manila and raised in the Netherlands, he grew up in a musical household and learned guitar before dance music got hold of him, and his real education happened in hip-hop and graffiti culture as a kid. That background still shows in how he builds a track, with an ear for rhythm and a taste for the loud, physical gesture over the polite one.
The live work is where the catalog earns out. He has played rooms as different as Hakkasan at MGM Grand and Academy LA, along with a long list of clubs that reward a DJ who can read a crowd and change course mid-set.
