Lil Dicky is the stage name of David Andrew Burd, a solo comedy performer who writes and delivers his material in hip-hop form. The comedy came first and the rapping was the vehicle: Burd took up the mic as a way to break into television and film writing, then found the audience was for the jokes. His 2013 song "Ex-Boyfriend" drew roughly one million views in a week, and the run that followed produced "Freaky Friday" in 2018 and "Earth" in 2019.
He came at this from the writing side rather than the club circuit. Burd was born in Pennsylvania and comes out of Cheltenham, and he has worked as a solo act throughout, with the comedy rap and comedy hip hop lanes as his own.
The awards conversation has followed the same material. He picked up a Best YouTube Musician nomination in 2016, and "Freaky Friday" earned nominations for Best Video in 2018 and for Top R&B Song and Best Music Video in 2019. "Earth" was nominated for Video for Good that same year.
