Lil Jon is an Atlanta rapper, producer and DJ, and crunk is the ground his whole catalog stands on. Kings of Crunk, cut with the East Side Boyz, is the record that made the case for the sound and took Billboard's Independent Album of the Year with it. Crunk Rock carried the same low-end dirty south approach under his own name, and he has kept the run going on Tiger Turn, most recently with Something's In The Water.
He came up in the DJ booth, not the vocal booth. Born Jonathan Smith, he learned the room from behind the decks at Club Phoenix, a nightclub in Atlanta, reading a crowd night after night before he ever built a record designed to move one.
One year did a lot of the work. In 2004 he took a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Yeah!" and Billboard named him Hot 100 Producer of the Year, while the East Side Boyz work pulled in two Billboard awards of its own, including Independent Album Artist of the Year. He has also recorded as part of Dynamik Duo. That combination of hits and crowd instinct has carried him to rooms like Ziggo Dome, Gelredome and Thomond Park, and it makes him a strong fit for college programming, festival and fair lineups, casino dates, corporate events and private shows.
