Loretta Lynn was an American country singer-songwriter who worked in honky tonk, folk, and the plainspoken writing tradition that came with them. Her catalog runs past fifty releases, and the later ones show how long her writing held up: Van Lear Rose in 2004 brought her two Grammy Awards, Full Circle followed in 2016, and Still Woman Enough arrived in 2021. She recorded and performed under her own name for her entire career.
She came up in a coal-mining hollow. Born Loretta Webb in a poor Appalachian community in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, she taught herself guitar and songwriting while raising children, and local club dates gave way to national country stardom through the 1960s.
Lynn joined the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in 1962 and remained a member and regular performer there, while also playing extensively at her own Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, and appearing across major country touring circuits and television specials. The Academy of Country Music named her Artist of the Decade for the 1970s, she received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003, and she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988. That record made her a headline draw for fair and festival lineups, casino stages, theater dates, and private engagements.
