Machine Head is an Oakland metal band whose catalog runs across thrash, groove metal, and heavy metal. Their Roadrunner Records years established the sound, and the albums since have kept the band moving rather than repeating: Bloodstone & Diamonds in 2014, the long-form Of Kingdom and Crown in 2022, and Unatoned in 2025, more than three decades into the band's run.
The band's roots are in the Bay Area thrash scene. Vocalist and guitarist Robb Flynn founded Machine Head on October 12, 1991, after his time in Forbidden and Vio-Lence, and he has fronted the band ever since. That is thirty-plus years of continuous work from a single founding voice, which is rare in a genre this loud.
Flynn has built the band around a rotating cast of players, among them guitarists Ahrue Luster and Phil Demmel, drummer Dave McClain, and bassist Jared MacEachern. Their song "Halo" earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance. On stage they have worked rooms like The Warfield, the Hollywood Palladium, and the Marquee Theatre, which makes them a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, college and campus events, casino showrooms, and private engagements looking for a headline metal act with a real history behind it.
