Max B is a Harlem rapper working in east coast hip hop and the melodic strain of the music his own name is attached to: wave, sometimes called Harlem wave. His catalog runs from Million Dollar Baby in 2006 through Vigilante Season in 2011, and it kept moving without him in the room, with Negro Spirituals arriving in 2021 and new material still landing under his name.
He came up in the projects. Born Charly Wingate in 1978 and raised in the Abraham Lincoln Houses in Harlem, he served a robbery sentence from 1997 to 2005, then went after a rap career on his release, first as Max Biggaveli and later under the shortened Max B.
A solo artist by trade, he built his early run alongside Jim Jones and the ByrdGang crew and released through ByrdGang Records. Live, his name carries rooms of very different sizes, from Summerstage and Herbert Von King Park in New York to Citizens House of Blues Boston.
