Obongjayar is the stage name of Steven Umoh, a London-based solo artist whose work sits between soul, afrobeat and alternative R&B. He opened his catalog with the Home EP in 2016, arrived at full length with Some Nights I Dream of Doors in 2022, and returned in 2025 with Paradise Now. He records for September Recordings.
The blend in that sound has a straightforward source. Umoh was born in Calabar, Nigeria, and grew up there before moving to Surrey, England at 17, then based himself in London. What he writes now pulls from both the Nigerian upbringing behind him and the UK music around him.
In 2021 he won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song for God's Own Children, co-written with Barney Lister. Live, he has worked stages as different as the Northcote Theatre, the Princess Theatre and Brockwell Park, and that reach makes him a strong booking for festival lineups, college programming, performing arts center dates and private events.
