Old Crow Medicine Show plays old-time string band music at the meeting point of bluegrass, country, folk and alternative country, and the group has been at it since 1998. Remedy (2014) brought the band a Grammy for Best Folk Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, Volunteer followed in 2018, and Paint This Town (2022) carried the same string band instincts into a catalog now more than three dozen titles deep. The band records for Nettwerk.
They started on the street. Five founding members, Ketch Secor, Critter Fuqua, Willie Watson and Morgan Jahnig among them, met in Ithaca, New York, cut a ten-song cassette called Trans:mission, and set out busking across Canada in October 1998. The group's origin is Harrisonburg, and better than a quarter century later the work still sounds like music made to be played in front of people rather than at them.
Beyond the win for Remedy, the band shares a Grammy for Big Easy Express with Mumford & Sons (2013), holds the Americana Trailblazer Award, and drew a 2024 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album for Jubilee. On the road they turn up everywhere from Pike's Peak Center and the Gallivan Center to the Ford Wyoming Center, which is the range that makes them a straightforward booking for festival and fair lineups, college programming, casino and performing arts center dates, corporate events and private shows.
