Patti LaBelle is a soul, R&B and gospel singer whose reputation has always rested on what happens in the room. Her first Grammy came in 1992 for the album Burnin', and when the second arrived at the end of the decade it was for Live! One Night Only, a record cut in front of an audience. That is the tell. The studio albums that followed, Timeless Journey among them, are the work of a vocalist who has never needed the production to do the lifting.
She came up in groups. A Philadelphia native, LaBelle started out in 1961 fronting The Bluebelles, carried that partnership forward into Labelle, and only then stepped out under her own name, where more than thirty charted singles followed. Lady Marmalade, the song that came out of those group years, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, decades after the fact and long after she had moved on from it.
The recognition has kept pace with the work: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993, a Legend Award from the World Music Awards in 2007, and an induction into the Apollo Theater's Legends Hall of Fame in 2009, the last of which says the most about where she comes from. She still works the room the same way at venues like Pike's Peak Center, and she remains a sought-after live act for casino showrooms and performing arts centers, fair and festival lineups, college programming, corporate events and private engagements.
