PM Dawn built their music on the soft edges of hip hop, folding soul and R&B into songs that leaned closer to alternative pop than to anything else on rap radio. "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" carried them to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1991, and it is still the door most listeners walk through. What came later got stranger and more personal, from Jesus Wept in 1997 to Dearest Christian, I'm So Very Sorry for Bringing You Here. Love, Dad in 1998, an album whose title says plenty about how far the group had moved from the singles chart.
It started in Jersey City. The group formed there in 1988 and kept working under the name until 2016, a stretch of close to three decades that ran from a chart-topping single through a catalog of more than thirty releases across R&B, soul, and the alternative wing of hip hop.
At the center of the credits is Prince Be, listed as Attrell Cordes and sometimes as Prince Be the Nocturnal, with DJ Minute Mix, K-R.O.K., and Gregory Lewis Carr II among the members who worked around him and Cleopatra Records holding the catalog.
