Portugal. The Man is a psychedelic rock band out of Wasilla, Alaska, working across alternative, experimental, and indie rock and pop, whose surprise 2017 single "Feel It Still" turned a band thirteen years and eight albums into their career into an overnight sensation. The song won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, was named Alternative Rock Song of the Year at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards, and went 7x Platinum, all off the back of Woodstock, the album that finally broke them wide. They returned in 2023 with Chris Black Changed My Life, a record built in the wake of real loss.
That title isn't a bit. The band lost their longtime friend and touring MC, Chris Black, in 2019, right as frontman John Gourley was sidelined by a jaw injury that threatened his ability to sing, and around the same time his daughter was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease. Rather than let that pull them apart, the band turned it into their most personal record yet, working with producer Jeff Bhasker and pulling in collaborators like Black Thought and Unknown Mortal Orchestra to make something Gourley has described as the first time he felt he'd made a complete record.
The band has built its name on the road as much as on record, with more than 1,600 shows performed and a reputation as festival favorites, backed by a lineup that has included John Baldwin Gourley, Zachary Scott Carothers, Kyle O'Quin, and Jason Wade Sechrist. Signed to Atlantic Records, with a catalog spanning Evil Friends, Woodstock, and Chris Black Changed My Life, they are a sought-after live act for festival and fair lineups, college events, corporate dates, and private shows.
