Public Enemy turned East Coast hip-hop into an argument. The group's hardcore, political rap took the Village Voice national critics poll Best Album award in 1988 for It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, and Fear of a Black Planet drew a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1991. The Columbia Records act was still recording toward the same end three decades on, releasing What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down? in 2020.
The group came together on college radio. Chuck D, Hank Shocklee, Bill Stephney, and Flavor Flav met around a program at Adelphi University on Long Island, New York, and formed Public Enemy out of that work in 1982. Their recording run dates from 1986.
Professor Griff, Terminator X, and DJ Lord have all carried parts of the lineup. Public Enemy is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group four years running, from 1990 through 1993. The group played South by Southwest in the early 1990s, introducing Fight the Power, Terrordome, and 911 Is a Joke there, and its stages include Boardwalk Hall, Yaamava' Theater, and the OceanFirst Bank Center at Monmouth University. That range travels well to college programming, festival and fair lineups, casino showrooms, and private events.
