Q-Tip is an MC and producer whose work sits at the crossroads of east coast hip hop, boom bap, alternative hip hop and conscious hip hop. His solo catalog opens with Amplified in 1999, continues with Kamaal the Abstract in 2002 and arrives at The Renaissance in 2008, the record that earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album in 2010. He records for Universal Motown.
He came up in a group before he came up on his own. Born Jonathan Davis in St. Albans and later known as Kamaal Ibn John Fareed, he founded A Tribe Called Quest in the mid-1980s as its MC and producer, and he has been building a catalog ever since.
His credits reach past his own records. Q-Tip worked as part of the production collective The Ummah and appeared on collaborative projects with Heavy D. & The Boyz and The Stop the Violence Movement. His Grammy win came from outside his home genre: Best Dance Recording in 2006 for "Galvanize" with The Chemical Brothers. "Vivrant Thing" also drew a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance and an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Hip-Hop Video in 2000.
