REO Speedwagon are an Illinois rock band who made their name in arena rock and AOR, the melodic end of classic rock with pop-rock hooks and a hard-rock edge when the song calls for it. Signed to Epic Records, they have put out close to fifty releases, and the run through the 1990s and 2000s shows a band that kept recording rather than living off the back catalog: Building the Bridge in 1996, Find Your Own Way Home in 2007, and a holiday album, Not So Silent Night: Christmas With REO Speedwagon, in 2009. Worldwide sales sit above 40 million records.
They started as a college band. REO Speedwagon came together in 1968 in Champaign, Illinois, formed by two University of Illinois students, keyboardist Neal Doughty and drummer Alan Gratzer, and the group has been working under that name ever since.
More than thirty musicians have passed through the lineup across those decades, Dave Amato and Mike Blair among them, and the band still fills amphitheater rooms on the scale of Budweiser Stage. That makes them a reliable headliner for fair and festival lineups, casino showrooms, college events, corporate dates, and private engagements.
