Styx has spent since 1972 working the seam between progressive rock ambition and hard rock volume, an American band whose songs were built to be sung back at them. Their years on A&M Records turned that anthemic instinct into gold and platinum RIAA certifications, and Paradise Theatre went multi-platinum, setting a scale the band has played to ever since. The studio work never really stopped either: The Mission in 2017, then Crash of the Crown in 2021, both arriving decades after most of their peers had settled into reissues.
The band existed before the name did. Dennis DeYoung and twin brothers Chuck and John Panozzo started a Chicago group called TW4 in the early 1960s, spent most of a decade playing it out, and only became Styx in the early 1970s. That is close to ten years of practice before the first record under the name that stuck, and it shows in how they handle a room.
The lineup that carried the name forward has included James Young alongside the founders, and the road remains the point: Styx keeps turning up at Budweiser Stage, Xfinity Center and the Celeste Center, more than fifty years into the job. That durability is the booking case. They fit fair and festival lineups, casino showrooms, college events, corporate dates and private shows, with a catalog most of an audience already knows by heart.
