Rhett Akins is a country singer and songwriter whose recording career and his writing credits point in the same direction. Thousand Memories arrived in 1993, Somebody New followed in 1996, and Friday Night in Dixie in 2002 carried him into a second decade of releases. His label home is WMG.
He came out of Valdosta, and the door opened secondhand rather than by pitch: Decca Records heard one of his demos, and a professional music career followed from there.
The writing side has since collected the credentials that Nashville reserves for its craftsmen. The Academy of Country Music named him Songwriter of the Year in 2018, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted him in 2021. On stage he has worked rooms at both ends of the scale, from the Grand Ole Opry House and the listening-room setting of 3rd & Lindsley to Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center.
