Rina Sawayama makes pop with one foot in art pop and the other in alternative R&B, and her records show a writer working out an idea in public. She arrived with RINA in 2017, sharpened the sound on SAWAYAMA in 2020, and reached furthest on Hold the Girl in 2022. She records for Dirty Hit and performs as a solo artist.
She came to pop by way of two countries and took her time about it. Born in Niigata, Japan in 1990, she moved to London at five and did not start a solo career until 2013, which means the artist audiences meet on stage had already spent years figuring out what she wanted to say before she said it.
The recognition has tracked the invention rather than the hype. Attitude gave her its Breakthrough Award in 2020, the AIM Independent Music Awards named her their Innovator in 2022, and the BRIT Awards put her up for Best New Artist in 2023, a full decade after she began.
