Sam Hunt is a country artist whose sound blends contemporary country, country pop, and R&B, a fusion he brought to mainstream country radio with 2017's "Body Like a Back Road," which spent 34 weeks at number one on the Hot Country Songs chart, breaking the record previously held by Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise." Signed to MCA Nashville under UMG, he has kept building since, from "23" in 2021 and "Water Under the Bridge" in 2022 to "Outskirts" and the EP Locked Up in 2023 and 2024.
He came to music by way of the football field, not the other way around. Hunt quarterbacked Cedartown High School in Georgia, then played two years at Middle Tennessee State University and two more at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, majoring in philosophy before graduating with a business degree in economics. When a 2008 tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs didn't pan out, he moved to Nashville and made his name as a songwriter first, writing hits for Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, and Billy Currington years before he ever released a song under his own name.
That path shows in an approach that pulls country pop and R&B into the same frame, and it's carried Hunt to an American Music Award, a CMT Music Award, and rooms like the SERVPRO Pavilion at The Meadow Event Park and the Waterside Pavilion at the Calvert Marine Museum. Even his newer material stays personal: "Outskirts" grew out of reconciling with his wife, Hannah Lee Fowler, after the two had filed for divorce. That mix of chart success and real songwriting still makes him a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, college events, corporate dates, and private engagements.
