Los Angeles native Henry Laufer goes by the alias Shlohmo for his experimental hip-hop productions, which encompass far-ranging influences such as R&B, doom metal, and drum'n'bass. A founding member of Wedidit Collective, he first received attention for early releases such as 2011's Bad Vibes, which mixed airy, abstract beats with grimly atmospheric guitars. Following collaborations with Jeremih and Banks, Shlohmo released the heavier Dark Red in 2015, and he expanded on that album's sound with the more apocalyptic The End in 2019.
Laufer started making music at the age of 14, and by 17 he was making cinematic beats in the same spirit as Flying Lotus, J-Roc, and Ras G. In 2008, during his senior year of high school, he co-founded Wedidit Collective, an Internet label/community of L.A. artists which included eLan, RL Grime, Groundislava, D33J, Jonwayne, and others. Following the three EPs Shlo-Fi, Camping, and Places, and the mini-album Shlomoshun Deluxe, Laufer released his first full-length, 2011's Bad Vibes on Friends of Friends. Shlohmo completed remixes for a variety of dance, indie, and hip-hop/R&B artists (including Lianne La Havas, LOL Boys, and the Weeknd), and collaborated with Banks and Jeremih in 2014. True Panther Sounds released Shlohmo's metal-inspired Dark Red full-length, and he toured with a band including fellow Wedidit members. Following production work for Post Malone, Yung Lean, Joji, and others, Shlohmo returned to Friends of Friends with 2019's The End. An EP, Heaven Inc, arrived in September 2020.
