Steve Miller Band has been working the same blues rock seam since 1967, though the group has never been shy about wandering off it. The Capitol Records run pushed the band through psychedelic rock, country rock and pop rock, and the catalog it left behind runs to dozens of titles. What is telling is where the road ended up: Bingo! in 2010 and Let Your Hair Down the year after are blues records, the sound of a band circling back to the music it started with.
They came out of San Francisco when San Francisco was the argument. Miller was a mainstay of the scene that upended American culture in the late 1960s, and the band was on the bill at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, before most audiences knew the name. The clearest picture of those early years is a night at the Fillmore West, where the group backed Chuck Berry and the tape was kept for a live album. That is the job description in one line: a band good enough to stand behind a founder of the form and hold it down.
The lineup has always been a revolving door with Steve Miller at the hinge. More than thirty musicians have passed through, among them Boz Scaggs, drummer Tim Davis and Ross Valory, and the sound survived every one of those changes. Miller has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the band still plays the full range of rooms, from the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center to the Honda Center and YouTube Theater. That reach is what makes them a straightforward fit for festival and fair lineups, casino showrooms, college and corporate events, and private engagements.
