Sum 41 plays punk rock with pop-punk hooks and an alternative metal edge, and the Ajax, Ontario band has been at it long enough to have put several versions of that sound on record. 13 Voices (2016) and Order in Decline (2019) leaned toward the heavier end of it, and Heaven :x: Hell (2024) is the most recent release. Sum 41 built its reputation onstage first. Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz started the band in 1996 as high school friends, and the group made its early name on raucous live shows in the Southern Ontario punk scene, years before the awards caught up.
The lineup around Whibley has included Jason McCaslin, Dave Baksh, and Tom Thacker. Sum 41 won the Juno Award for Group of the Year in 2005 and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2025, and the live résumé runs from multiple years on Warped Tour and main-stage sets at Reading and Leeds to a room as formal as Koerner Hall. That range is the selling point: a band that can carry a festival crowd or a seated hall, which makes it a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, college events, corporate dates, casinos, and private engagements.
