James are the Manchester band behind "Sit Down," the 1991 anthem that reached No. 2 in the UK, and "Laid," the college radio favorite that pushed their 1993 album of the same name past 600,000 copies in the U.S. With nine UK Top 10 albums, more than 25 million albums sold and hits like "Come Home" and "She's a Star," they have kept making new music into their fifth decade, including the orchestral Be Opened by the Wonderful in 2023 and their 18th studio album, Yummy, in 2024.
Their singer started out as the band's dancer. Bassist Jim Glennie helped form James in Manchester's Whalley Range in 1982, and Tim Booth, who joined to dance at their shows, soon took over vocals. The band released its first EP on Factory Records, played the Haçienda and supported the Smiths, who went on to cover their song "What's the World."
James are still a major live draw. In 2025 they played their first U.S. headline tour in 15 years, performing Laid in full each night, and they have announced a 2026 UK arena tour alongside the career-spanning box set Nothing But Love. With Booth, Glennie, Saul Davies, Mark Hunter and trumpeter Andy Diagram at the core of the lineup, the band is a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, performing arts centers, college events, casinos and private engagements.
