Killer Mike is an Atlanta rapper whose records move across hip hop, rap, dirty south, and jazz. He arrived on wax as a guest, turning up on "Snappin' and Trappin'" from OutKast's 2000 LP Stankonia and then on "The Whole World," the Grammy-winning single from the group's greatest hits album. What began as a featured verse turned into a catalog of his own, from R.A.P. Music in 2012 to MICHAEL in 2023, the album that won Best Rap Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards and Album of the Year at the BET Awards. He records for Loma Vista Recordings.
Atlanta is the through-line. He came up in the city's rap scene rather than around it, first as part of the Purple Ribbon All-Stars, and his early credits with OutKast put his voice on records that defined that era of Southern hip hop. The featured-artist Grammy he earned for "The Whole World" in 2003 came before his own name headlined anything.
He works in more than one configuration. Run the Jewels is one, the live band Michael & The Mighty Midnight Revival is another, and "Scientists & Engineers," which took Best Rap Song at the 2024 Grammys, brought in André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.
