Mustafa is a Toronto writer and performer whose work sits where spoken word meets folk and R&B. He began billed as Mustafa the Poet, and the poet is still the through-line: the language comes first, the delivery stays close and unhurried, and the stage is where it lands. His recorded work, When Smoke Rises in 2021 and Dunya in 2024, has traveled alongside a live practice built on the same voice. In 2025 he became the first-ever winner of the Polaris Song Prize, for "Gaza Is Calling."
He writes from where he is from. Born in Toronto to Sudanese immigrants and raised in the Regent Park community housing project, Mustafa draws on that place as the formative ground of the work, and the specificity of it is what gives the material its weight.
Performing solo, Mustafa has taken that material to rooms including Royal Festival Hall, Gota Lejon, and Théâtre du Châtelet.
