Nitty Gritty Dirt Band works the ground where country, folk rock, country rock and bluegrass meet, a stretch of territory they have been covering since 1966. They recorded for Liberty Records, and their catalog moves from Acoustic in 1994 to the third volume of Will the Circle Be Unbroken in 2002, then on to Speed of Life in 2009.
The band started in Long Beach. Founding member Jeff Hanna and friends jammed at a local guitar shop and put together an old-style jug band, which turned into a California folk-rock group and began playing gigs around Southern California.
A long list of musicians has come through the group, among them Bernie Leadon, Jimmy Ibbotson, Chris Darrow and Jim Photoglo. Four Grammy Awards sit behind the band, and the live schedule still runs through rooms like The Mission Ballroom, Dillon Amphitheater and the Alberta Bair Theater. That combination of country, bluegrass and folk rock fits festival and fair lineups, college events, casino and performing arts center dates, corporate shows and private events.
