Niykee Heaton writes in the seam between alternative R&B, pop, and alternative hip-hop, with an acoustic pop streak running underneath most of it. The Bad Intentions EP arrived in 2014, The Bedroom Tour Playlist followed in 2016, and Starting Over in 2018, a run that took her from interpreting other people's songs to holding a catalog of her own.
The audience came before the catalog. Heaton's origin traces back to South Africa, and her start came on YouTube, where she uploaded acoustic covers and watched her reading of Chief Keef's "Love Sosa" go viral. That cover did the job an early single usually does. It found the listeners first, and the releases followed. The through-line from those uploads to the records is the same one: a voice and a song that hold up without much built around them.
