Paul Wall is a Houston rapper whose catalog sits inside the dirty south tradition and the chopped-and-screwed sound the city built for itself. More than thirty releases deep, his run is defined by consistency rather than reinvention. Heart of a Champion carried the confidence of an artist who had already won his hometown, and slab god, arriving years later, put him right back in the car culture that shaped his ear in the first place.
He came up Houston to the bone. Born Paul Michael Slayton in March 1981, he grew up surrounded by the city's cars and its mixtape economy, learning the trade in a scene where a tape passed hand to hand did the work a label would do anywhere else. The Swishahouse movement of the early 2000s took that local apprenticeship national.
The company he keeps fills in the rest.
