Pentatonix sing pop music with nothing behind them but each other, voices stacked in close harmony, and the arrangement is where the work shows. The award that fits them best says so outright: a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. An online audience got there first, which is how a vocal group ends up with a Diamond Play Button hanging near the Grammy, along with Streamy and YouTube Music Awards. Signed to RCA Records and recording since 2011, the group has built a catalog with holiday music at its center and still adds to it, from The Lucky Ones in 2021 to Christmas in the City in 2025.
It started in a choir room. Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi and Kirstin Maldonado had already sung together in high school in Arlington, Texas, and decided the three of them were a group. The lineup has grown well past that trio, Kevin Olusola among the voices in it, but the blend that choir singers learn early is still the thing holding the records together.
That sound travels further than a choir room suggests. Pentatonix have carried it into Avicii Arena, the Ziggo Dome and Sportpaleis Antwerpen, which makes for an unusual booking: a Grammy-winning act that fills an arena on voices alone, with a holiday catalog deep enough to anchor a December date. They sit as comfortably on college programming and corporate calendars as they do on fair, festival and casino lineups, and on private events.
