Rosanne Cash has spent a long career moving between country, folk and Americana without ever settling permanently into any one of them. Her first Grammy arrived in 1985, for the country vocal performance on "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me," and the records that followed kept widening the frame rather than defending that early lane. Black Cadillac came in 2006, and by the time The River & The Thread was released in 2013 the awards had caught up to where she had been heading for years: it won the Grammy for Best Americana Album. She Remembers Everything followed in 2018. Her catalog has moved from Columbia Records to RumbleStrip Records, with a later association with Blue Note along the way.

She came by the music honestly, and at a distance. Cash was born in Memphis in 1955, the eldest daughter of Johnny Cash and Vivian Liberto, and when the family left Memphis for Los Angeles in 1959 she grew up in California, a long way from the city and the genre her surname was already attached to. What she did with that inheritance was write her way out of it.

The songwriting is the part her peers singled out: the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted her in 2015, and she has continued to work as a singer, guitarist and writer of her own material rather than an interpreter of anyone else's. The concert halls have come to her as well, through artist residencies and programming partnerships at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and SFJAZZ. That combination, a songwriter with decades of catalog and a performer institutions trust with a season, makes her a strong fit for performing arts centers, college and university series, festival lineups, corporate events and private engagements.
